The South Asian Network’s annual gala is a special evening that brings the greater Los Angeles community together in celebration of the achievements of the South Asian Network (SAN), recognition of leaders in our community, and to raise support for SAN’s important programming. The evening features a cocktail reception, raffle, dinner, awards program, and entertainment. Over 250 business, government, and nonprofit leaders are expected from across the greater Los Angeles area.
Surina Khan is CEO of the Women’s Foundation of California where she leads the Foundation’s work to advance the health, safety, and economic security of women, girls and transgender people in California. The Foundation’s program strategy is focused on building community-based power through investing in community organizations, training community leaders in policy advocacy, convening key partners, and mobilizing significant financial resources. For more than two decades, Surina has been a leader in the philanthropic and non-profit social justice sector starting with local community-based publishing in New England and then shifting to national and global work on an array of social justice issues including women’s rights, LGBT rights, human rights and more. She is a recognized advocate for gender, racial, and economic justice and a frequent commentator on the power of women’s philanthropy.
Raja Michael is a South Asian-American Stand-up comic, actor, and writer from New Jersey. Like many children of working class immigrant parents, Raja thought she had to take the "safe road" and repress her dreams of becoming a performer. Raja worked as a mild mannered social worker most of her adult life. She worked with domestic violence victims, in homeless services, and with refugees as an NGO worker. Wherever she went, she always made people laugh. Raja originally moved to L.A. to go to grad school. That is where she realized that it was time to drop the books and time to grab the mic. She has been making audiences laugh ever since.
As a comic, Raja focuses on comedy that punches up rather than down. She strives to create and perform content of value, discussing current issues, social justice, and occasionally, her love of posting selfies on instagram. Raja likes to use the power she has at the mic to promote inclusion, critical thinking, and, of course, have fun.
